Controls Engineer – 12-Month Contract

NexGen Search is working with a leading client in the automation and robotics sector to appoint a Controls Engineer based in Massachusetts. This is an initial 12-month contract with a strong likelihood of extension and the option to convert into a full-time permanent position.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in hands-on, fast-paced environments, working across PLC programming, motion control, and system integration within complex electromechanical systems.

The Role

  • Develop and maintain control systems using Ladder Logic and Structured Text on Rockwell Allen-Bradley and Siemens PLC platforms
  • Design and implement automation solutions using Python for automation utilities, device integration, and data handling
  • Configure and integrate industrial communication protocols including EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, EtherCAT, IO-Link, TCP/IP, OPC-UA and Modbus
  • Work with servo drives, VFDs, and motion control systems
  • Develop and implement safety PLC systems including GuardLogix and Siemens F-CPU and support risk assessments
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues across complex electromechanical systems
  • Create and review technical specifications, electrical schematics, and system requirements documentation
  • Support on-site build, commissioning, and debugging activities
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams across multiple regions

What We Are Looking For

  • 8 or more years of experience in industrial controls and automation engineering
  • Strong PLC programming experience with Rockwell and/or Siemens platforms
  • Proficiency in Python for industrial or automation applications
  • Experience with industrial networks and fieldbus systems
  • Hands-on experience with motion control systems
  • Knowledge of functional safety and safety PLC programming
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting capabilities
  • Ability to work independently in on-site engineering environments

Nice to Have

  • Experience integrating robotic systems such as FANUC or ABB
  • Knowledge of machinery safety standards, including ISO 13849, IEC 61508, NFPA 79 and UL-508A
  • Experience with Git and structured software development practices
  • Familiarity with Linux environments
  • Exposure to AWS tools such as S3 and CloudWatch
  • Experience using Jira or similar ticketing systems
  • Programming experience in C/C++
